In defense of Adnan Al Rifai

I started to read a good book called  محطّات
 في سبيل الحكمة
(Stations in the way to wisdom ) by a Syrian writer Adnan Al rifai/الرفاعي عدنان
Adnan advocates that we have to distinguish between Mohammad the messenger of God and Mohammad the human. I believe that sorting out what is the life of our prophet and what are unverified stories about Mohammad is step one toward cleaning up our intellectual inheritance.

I have to admit that I do not have time to watch television. However during Ramadan, I had enjoyed watching a program called the Great Miracle with Adnan as a guest. However I was not aware that the program had received since Ramadan a lot of accusations. It is very sad to read the amount of negative comments associated with Adnan's name. A lot of these arguments is ridiculous. For instance, he is criticized for being an engineer. As if doing Islamic research is a privilege for imams only. Every time God addresses the issue of analysis, the word used in Koran is“Those who have brains”.
There is hope to update Islam as long as we do not oppress those who are willing to do the research and speak up about the mistakes which are centuries old.

  2. Adnan Al Rifai in fact shows more respect for Prophet Mohammed (Praise be upon him) by removing conradictory "sunnah" and hadiths that conflict with the letter and spirit of the HOly book of Quran. The type of work of Eng. Adnan Al Rafai is long over due; the Muslim Ummah has been in its darkest ages because of the addition over the past centuries of many hadiths and "sunna" practices by all sects of Islam in the name of Islam but totally disregarding or contradicting the Holy Quran.

It is unfortunate that some of our Muslim brothers resort to malicious accusations without firt studying the clear and undoubtful proof submitted by Eng. Adnan. In effect, many of our Muslim brothers these days mimic the infidals who responded to many prophet including Prophet Mohammed (Prais be Upon Him) by claiming what their forefathers passed on to them is correc just because it was passed on to them without critically thinking of what they are believing in. The Holy Quran mentions these people who follow tradition and forget the verses of Allah.

Lastly but not least, to those who question the credibility and the creditnetials of Eng. Adnan should study the history of ALL THE PROPHETS (empahsis added) where they will find each of one them had worked in before and during the transmission of Alla's Message. Prophet Mohammed was a trader/salesman, Prophet Moses was a shephard, Prophet Essa was a carpenter, etc. there is a moral in the examples of the prophets recieving a divine message while working in a worldly job.

Remember my dear brothers, Allah prefers believers who think, ask why, objectivley criticize, contemplate and research over those that do nothing but follow without thinking.

  9. "As if doing Islamic research is a privilege for imams only."

Who made that conclusion based on the claim that he is an engineer? You seem to be assuming that that is what his opposers conclude. One thing that can be deduced from this is that he can't academically teach about Islam as he has no academic related credentials. This comes from scholars who are qualified and spent majority of their lives learning and practicing Islam, in line with the Salaf.

By the way, not every Imam who does "Islamic research" is qualified to speak about Islam, or give fatawa, or is a scholar.

    1. Unfortunately, many of those who have spent their lives learning and practicing Islam know nothing more than those few words they memorized from old books written by other people! The main difference between people like Adnan and the so-called scholars is using the brain. In Islam, there is no such a thing as "re'jal deen". Religion is not supposed to be a profession! Quran has numerous sentences where Allah criticizes us for not using our brains, for not thinking, for not truly understand what the verses of Quran mean. This comment can take pages and pages, but I will just post Adnan's website link as he is capable of addressing many issues for those who are willing to use their brain to understand, not to memorize.

  10. As Gamal Al Banna said. Islam should provide the freedom to intellectual growth rather than making it confined and restricted to a particular time and society in history.
